Tell Me About Heaven, Grandpa Rabbit! The Book that took Gold

‘Tell Me About Heaven, Grandpa Rabbit!’ is Jenny Albums’ latest children’s picture book and has been awarded Gold in the children’s book category of the Prima Baby Awards.

Other contending publishers including, Bloomsbury, Egmont and Little Tiger Press entered the competition with titles such as ‘Alfie in the Garden’ by Bloomsbury Publishing and ‘Doughnuts for a Dragon’ by Egmont.

It wasn't plain sailing for Jenny as the books front cover was originally rejected by UK publishers, goes to show you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover.

Jenny said: “I was shocked when I heard the results. When I first took a look at the awards shortlist, I balked. My little title was up against those from the major players in children’s publishing. Ironically, some of the publishers on the list had originally been offered my story in the first place, but rejected it.”

The book is aimed at children that have lost a member of their family to try and help them understand the situation. Ms Album said: “I wrote this story after facing anxious questions from my little girl, following the death of a family friend. It is a book that is very close to my heart, as it includes certain details and memories that are relevant to my own childhood.”

One of the judges of the award was Annabel Karmel, one of the people to inspire Ms Album in writing her book.

Ms Album added: “A while ago I had read that Annabel Karmel’s (now famous) children’s recipe book had originally been turned down by 15 publishers, but that she persisted. I recall she held the view that that she was ‘closer to her target audience than the people who were writing to tell her that her book wouldn't sell’. It gave me faith that maybe I should keep believing in the appeal of my own books aimed at parents like myself and their children."
