How to achieve an outstanding OFSTED rating

Having an outstanding OFSTED rating is important in order to generate a good reputation for your nursery. It also creates reassurance for parents, so they know that your nursery has been certified by an official educational body as having exceptional standards in child care and education.

According to OFSTED, inspectors focus on aspects of a nursery’s work that have the greatest impact on raising achievement. They are required to report on the quality of education provided in the nursery and must observe:

● the achievement of children at the nursery

● the quality of teaching in the nursery

● the behaviour and safety of pupils at the nursery

● the quality of leadership in and management of the nursery

Therefore, in order to achieve an outstanding OFSTED rating, owners need to make sure their nursery meets this criteria to the highest standard possible. Nursery owner Mandy Foulds and her team at Walberton Pre School use an App called 2Simple which allows them to monitor the progression of a child’s educational development against the national curriculum. “We can document things like a child recognising that a 2D square has four sides, for example” she says. This has allowed Mandy’s team to provide more evidence for OFSTED inspectors on the quality of education provided by their nursery.

The views of parents and staff also provide important evidence for an OFSTED inspection. Therefore an inspector will converse with them to find out their opinions on the quality of teaching and care at the nursery. If you have happy staff and happy parents, this will contribute towards an outstanding OFSTED rating.

OFSTED states that nurseries cannot be judged as outstanding for overall effectiveness unless they have outstanding teaching. This seems to be the key focus of achieving an outstanding OFSTED rating, so make sure you get this right and the rest should follow.
